The Offering By Alfred Wolmark, c. 1920
Alfred Wolmark (1877–1961)
A rare and symbolically charged work from Wolmark’s post-impressionist period, The Offering presents a moment of spiritual exchange between a well-muscled Black male figure and a luminous White female figure. Rendered in bold impasto and radiant colour, the composition transcends racial archetype to evoke reverence, beauty, and mutual presence.
Wolmark, a Polish-born British Jewish artist, was known for his vivid palette and idealized depictions of religious life. Here, he departs from his usual Jewish subjects to explore a broader humanist vision — one that invites reflection on sacrifice, gesture, and spiritual intimacy across difference.
