Frederick Thomas Callcott: Bust of a Child

A sensitive late Victorian portrait bust of a child by the English sculptor Frederick Thomas Callcott, modelled in terracotta and retaining its original rich, bronze-effect patination.

The child is portrayed with the head gently inclined and the eyes gazing thoughtfully to one side. Thick, loosely curling hair frames the delicately modelled face, while the broad sailor-style collar is tied in a bow at the chest. The informal pose, expressive eyes and carefully observed features give the portrait unusual warmth and individuality.
