A Samurai Menpō (Face Mask) Japan, Edo Period, Early 18th Century
A samurai face mask, retaining its original red lacquer finish, white boar’s hair moustache and silk lacing. Produced during the Edo period, such masks formed part of a suit of armour and were designed both to protect the wearer and to project an intimidating martial presence on the battlefield.
The finely modelled features an expressive grimacing mouth demonstrating the skill of Japanese armourers, who combined technical mastery with a sophisticated understanding of character and expression.
Iron with red lacquer, white boar’s hair and silk
