A rare and exceptional slit drum from the Mangbetu culture – Democratic Republic of Congo

A Mangbetu “nedundu” type drum, originating from the northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Carved from a single block of wood, it is distinguished by its elegant half-shell shape and its lateral openings, allowing it to be carried or suspended. Its surface is richly decorated with motifs created using metal nails, forming stylized figures, including animals, and a central figure. This type of decoration is characteristic Mangbetu aesthetics, renowned for their refinement and sense of composition. It gives the object a strong visual presence while conveying symbolic elements related to identity and status.

This drum belongs to the tradition of instruments used in courtly settings and ceremonies, where music and prestige were closely intertwined. The quality of its carving, the balance of its decoration, and its beautiful patina make it both a functional and highly decorative object, straddling the line between musical instrument and work of art.
