A rare and astonishing surreal drum from the Ashanti culture – Ghana

This is an anthropomorphic drum from the Ashanti culture (Ghana).

Carved from a single block of wood, it is distinguished by its unique shape resting on human legs, as well as by its relief decorations depicting symbolic figures and motifs.

The presence of stylized breasts and sculpted scenes refers to important themes such as fertility, community, and ancestors.
A musical instrument and symbolic object, this type of drum was used in ceremonies, rituals, or in contexts related to power and prestige. It could accompany dances and songs or mark important events.

Its anthropomorphic form reflects a view of the drum as a living object, imbued with meaning and memory. This example is very rare, especially with fully carved legs. It has a beautiful patina from use and dates back to the first half of the 20th century.
