A pair of Japanese bronze ‘tortoise’ vases Meiji / taishō period, early 20th century

A charming pair of Japanese bronze vases, each of baluster form and decorated in relief with tortoises, the animals naturalistically modelled against the surface of the body.

The tortoise has long held particular significance in Japanese art and symbolism, representing longevity, good fortune and endurance, and frequently appears in decorative arts of the Meiji and Taishō periods.

The bronzes are finely cast and retain an attractive dark patination, the unusual tortoise decoration giving the pair considerable character. Each bears a maker’s kao mark to the base.

Japanese, Meiji / Taishō period, early 20th century.

Patinated bronze.
