A German Botanical Teaching Model of a Rosaceae Blossom
A German Botanical Teaching Model of a Rosaceae Blossom By Institut Wichers & Co., Berlin, circa 1900
A finely modelled and hand-painted enlarged study of a blossom from the Rosaceae family, produced for botanical instruction by Institut Wichers & Co., Berlin. Executed in painted papier-mâché and mounted on its original turned wooden base, the model presents the characteristic five-petalled form and clustered stamens with clarity and precision, rendered at an exaggerated scale for academic study.
The underside retains its original printed label, with additional inventory markings, reflecting its use within a teaching collection in the late 19th or early 20th century. The soft white petals and warm ochre stamens are handled with a naturalistic delicacy, giving the model a refined sculptural quality.
Both scientifically accurate and visually elegant, the piece exemplifies the craftsmanship of early botanical teaching aids, where clarity of form and aesthetic sensitivity were closely aligned.
