A finely carved Swiss Black Forest anthropomorphic fox toothpick and match holder, modelled as a standing fox dressed in rustic attire and carrying a bundle of firewood upon its back – 19th century

The figure is shown holding a walking stick and wicker basket, flanked by integral receptacles for toothpicks and matches, all raised upon a naturalistically carved base. Executed with finely incised fur, expressive glass eyes and exceptional attention to detail, the composition exemplifies the wit and technical virtuosity for which late nineteenth-century Black Forest carving is renowned.

Anthropomorphic animal figures became a defining feature of the Black Forest tradition during the second half of the nineteenth century, imbuing native wildlife with human characteristics and occupations through richly observed carvings of remarkable charm and craftsmanship. Such works drew inspiration from the celebrated bronzes of the French animaliers, whose naturalistic treatment of animal subjects profoundly influenced decorative arts across Europe.
