A Fine Swiss Carved Black Forest St Bernard, Switzerland, circa 1880

A finely carved and naturalistically modelled Swiss Black Forest figure of a St Bernard rescue dog, standing upon a rocky Alpine base with a small brandy barrel suspended from its collar.

The carving is particularly accomplished, with careful attention to the dog’s powerful physique, heavy paws and thick coat, the fur individually worked to create a convincing sense of texture and movement. The expressive face, with its gently raised head, soulful eyes and characteristic jowls, captures both the strength and gentle temperament of the breed.

The St Bernard became internationally celebrated for its association with the monks of the Great St Bernard Hospice in the Swiss Alps, where the dogs were used to assist travellers and locate those lost in the snow. The small barrel of brandy, traditionally depicted around the neck of the rescue dog, became an enduring symbol of Alpine rescue, although largely a product of popular legend.

Carved St Bernards were a popular subject among the skilled woodcarvers of the Bernese Oberland during the 19th century, and this example demonstrates the quality of workmanship associated with the finest Swiss Black Forest animal carvings.

The figure retains a rich, dark brown patina, enhancing the finely worked detail of the carving.
