A Dated Carved Walnut Wall Box English, 1728

A Dated Carved Walnut Wall Box, English, 1728

The sloping front and compact proportions are characteristic of early eighteenth-century domestic wall boxes, traditionally used for the storage of candles.

The front is centred by a striking heraldic double-headed eagle above a panel bearing the date.

Surviving dated examples of such early domestic furniture are increasingly scarce. Combining sculptural presence, historic charm and exceptional decorative appeal, this remarkable wall box stands as a compelling example of English folk art from the early Georgian period.
