The Greek Slave, after Hiram Powers (1805–1873)
A finely modelled Parian figure of The Greek Slave, standing with her head turned and lowered, her wrists manacled and joined by chains. Beside her, an elaborately fringed cloth falls over a supporting pedestal, the composition raised on a circular base. English Parian ware, 19th century
Powers’ celebrated composition depicts a young Greek Christian woman captured during the Greek War of Independence and offered for sale in an Ottoman slave market. Her composed stance conveys dignity in captivity. The subject became one of the most recognisable sculptural images of the nineteenth century, its popularity extending through reductions in Parian porcelain, whose unglazed surface evokes the appearance of marble.
