Black Forest Carved Figure of the Lion of the Swiss Guards now repurposed as a round table/display plinth, circa 1880

A finely carved Black Forest figure depicting the Lion of the Swiss Guards, portrayed recumbent in solemn repose with its head resting upon a shield bearing the Swiss cross. Executed with exceptional attention to anatomical detail, the composition is framed by a naturalistically carved rocky surround adorned with alpine flora, reflecting the celebrated craftsmanship of the Black Forest carving tradition.

The subject derives from the Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal) in Lucerne, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved by Lukas Ahorn between 1820 and 1821 to commemorate the Swiss Guards who lost their lives defending the Tuileries Palace during the French Revolution. Regarded as one of Switzerland’s most enduring national symbols, the lion embodies loyalty, sacrifice and courage.
