A Fine Syrian Mother-of-Pearl and Bone Inlaid Octagonal Occasional Table

Damascus, Syria, late 19th century, circa 1880–1900

An elegant octagonal hardwood occasional table, the top inlaid with geometric designs in mother-of-pearl, bone and contrasting fruitwoods, centred by an elaborate interlaced star motif within multiple concentric borders of exceptional complexity. The frieze incorporates finely turned mashrabiya-style galleries above shaped Moorish arches, each panel enriched with further bone and ebony stringing. Raised on eight slender tapering legs, each inlaid to match the top, united by an octagonal undertier.
