Art Deco Silk Tapestries of the New York Skyline Attributed to Paul Poiret, c. 1920

Art Deco Silk Tapestries of the New York Skyline Attributed to Paul Poiret, c. 1920

This striking pair of Art Deco silk tapestries presents a stylised vision of the modern New York skyline, rendered in bold geometric forms and vibrant colour. Skyscraper silhouettes rise rhythmically through the composition, animated by curving motifs suggestive of steam, energy, and industrial movement. The richly embroidered borders, worked on a gold silk ground, incorporate angular patterns recalling Pre-Columbian and ‘exotic’ sources admired by avant-garde designers of the period. Attributed to Paul Poiret, the tapestries reflect his ambition to fuse fashion, modernity, and interior design into a unified decorative art.
